Almond Butter and Cacao Nib Protein Smoothie
Why This Works for Intermittent Fasting
Almond butter delivers healthy fats and a small amount of protein, cacao nibs add fibre, crunch, and a natural chocolate flavour without any added sugar, and a scoop of protein powder pushes this smoothie into genuinely satiating territory. The fat-and-protein combination keeps insulin low and blood sugar stable, making this an excellent way to break a fast without triggering the energy crash that a sugary shake would cause.
Ingredients
- 1 scoop (about 30g) unflavoured or vanilla whey or collagen protein powder
- 2 tbsp almond butter (unsweetened)
- 1 tbsp cacao nibs (plus extra for topping)
- 240ml (1 cup) unsweetened almond milk
- 120ml (½ cup) ice cubes
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- 5–6 drops liquid stevia or monk fruit sweetener (optional)
Instructions
-
Add the almond milk, almond butter, protein powder, and cinnamon to a blender.
-
Add the ice cubes and sweetener, if using.
-
Blend on high for 45–60 seconds until completely smooth and creamy.
-
Add the cacao nibs and pulse 2–3 times — just enough to distribute them without pulverising them completely, so you keep some texture and crunch.
-
Pour into a glass and top with a few extra cacao nibs.
-
Serve immediately.

Fasting Compatibility
Excellent for breaking a 16:8 or 18:6 fast — the protein and fat combination promotes strong satiety through to your next meal. Works well as a post-workout first meal for OMAD practitioners who want something quick before a larger meal later, or as a stand-alone light meal on a 20:4 protocol.
